| As you cross the Connecticut River note that about three thousand years ago Woodland Indians entered the area. During the late Woodland period, bands of Abenakis lived throughout Vermont including the Cowasuck (Kaosek) centered in Newbury, Vermont. They, along with other bands, used the Connecticut as a source of transportation for trade and to reach hunting and fishing grounds. There was no mention in the town records of Native American presence when the first settlers arrived in Orford. However, there are references to evidence of maize planting and numerous spear and arrowheads being turned up when the early settlers plowed. |
