The Carr and Gardner Blacksmith shop was located midway up Bridge Street on the left. In addition to this shop, Clarence Carr ran a livery stable. Given that traveling by horse was the most common means of transportation and that Orford was located on the Grafton County Turnpike route, a livery business was essential for providing food, water and overnight care for the horses. Horses, carriages and wagons were also available for travelers who disembarked at the Fairlee train station. Often a livery stable had a blacksmith. Blacksmiths not replaced horses’ shoes, but also made and repaired many metal objects including broken farm equipment. A sign above the shop reads Carr and Gardner Blacksmith. |
