The 1829 tax records indicate that John had a building worth $400, owned carriages, cattle and sheep, and owned various types of land. The 1840 records reveal a significant increase in his livestock which maybe explained by the fact that Rogers moved from his Ridge home in 1830 to a large farm near Indian Pond.

Cushman House and Cyclone

During the 1840s Hartwell Cushman purchased the Rogers’ house and in 1854 his brother John became the owner. Hartwell Cushman was a descendant of Robert Cushman, one of the three men who hired the Mayflower to bring the Pilgrims to Plimouth. Hartwell Cushman is pictured here in this 1892 photograph. On July 3, 1892, a cyclone hit the town of Orford knocking down 200 trees including this one pictured in front of the Rogers-Cushman home.
