Elms | |
As with many towns, Orford's Lower Street was lined with elms. Elms were a popular tree for both their beauty and the shade they provided. Unfortunately these trees, like many across the country, fell victim to Dutch Elm Disease. The disease arrived from the Netherlands in a shipment of logs sent to Ohio in 1929. With the help of airborne beetles the disease destroyed 100 million elms throughout the United States. |
