Granite Fence Posts

fence postsenlarge

Granite was used to make a wide variety of products including fence and hitching posts. Many of the granite fence posts are still in use throughout town. The posts at the base of the Ridge homes were not only used for fencing, but also to prevent carriages from riding up on private property when the roads became impassable during mud season. The granite fence posts may have been made by one of Orford's two mining companies—the Orford Quarrying and Manufacturing Company or the Merritt Black Granite Company.
