Willard House

Stedman Willard was born in Saxton's River, Vermont, and settled in Orford in 1813. By the time the Willard House was completed in 1829, Stedman Willard had seven children and had lost his first wife, Meriel, the daughter of John B. Wheeler. His second marriage was to Sarah Smith in 1838. Stedman Wheeler was active in town politics, a deacon of the Congregational Church, a representative to the state legislature, and instrumental in the opening of Orford Academy.
