Into the Woods

As you leave the brickyard area and join the trail, look for a number of clues that will help you understand the changing landscape. Do the size and type of trees around you suggest that this is an old forest or new? Are there any rock walls or fences that might have once marked the boundaries of a pasture or farm? Can you find an old apple tree? Could this be part of a larger orchard? Why does it have a funny bend? Perhaps an animal ate off the top when it was a young sapling. Are there cradle and pillow shapes on the ground? This is often evidence that a storm caused blowdowns—especially if the trees are lying in the same direction. Often a birch will grow out of a pillow due to the richness of the soil that had been created by the tree before it was uprooted. Can you find a row of larger trees that served as fence posts for grazing land? These trees once stood alone in former open pastures.
