| Daniel Frye Tillotson was most well known for his extensive business operations in diverse areas which included farming, lumbering, quarrying and operating two general stores. He became one of the greatest businessmen in Orford before losing most of his wealth. The 1840 tax records show Tillotson owning a sizeable number of sheep and horses, indicating that he was well under way with his farming enterprises. By 1850, according to the tax records, Tillotson had begun to diversify his businesses which included the Tillotson and Cushman store. His inability to manage the diversity of his assets and changing commodity prices caused by competition from the railroad severely impacted his wealth. |
